The Build | Lost in a 4×4 Overland Journey

This is where we share the story of how our Jeep Wrangler Rubicon has been set up for full-time overland travel.

Our approach has always been simple—build as little as possible, keep what we truly need, and focus on reliability over complexity. Everything on the vehicle was prepared before we left and has remained the same throughout a full year of continuous travel across the United States, Europe, and now Africa, often through remote and demanding conditions.

What makes our setup a bit different from many overland builds is how we’ve chosen to use the space we have. We kept the rear seats and worked within the limited trunk space to create a functional layout that supports long-term, full-time travel without turning the vehicle into something unrecognizable.

We’ve also made a conscious choice to keep the Jeep looking as close to a regular vehicle as possible. Rather than adding external gear and visible modifications, we’ve kept things discreet and internal. This has worked in our favor in many situations—at police checkpoints, while driving through cities, and when parking in different environments.

Over the course of this year on the road, we’ve occasionally thought about small improvements to make the setup a bit more comfortable. Nothing essential has been changed, though, as everything continues to work well for the way we travel. Those adjustments remain ideas for the future rather than necessities on the road.

In this section, we don’t break down specifications or present this as a “how-to” guide. Instead, we talk about the decisions behind our setup—why we built it this way and what we chose to carry for a long-term overland journey.
